Students at ETSU chose Train in an online vote to highlight this year's SGA Spring Concert. Train will be joined by the Dirty Guv'nahs from Knoxville. Every year, students vote on the artists they would like to see play the concert. The ETSU SGA has never been able to bring in the top vote-getter from the poll, until this year.
This year's SGA Spring Concert also comes with another first. The show will be open to the public. In years past, tickets for the ETSU spring and fall concerts could only be purchased by ETSU students, faculty and staff. If you hoped to attend an SGA concert and were not an ETSU student, your best bet was to quickly make an ETSU student your significant other or hope that your best friend was an ETSU student and owed you a favor.
All that changes with this concert. Previous ETSU student government administrations decided against opening concerts to the public for reasons such as space and fire code limitations or contract specifications with the artists. There are no such issues with this year's concert.
The concert will take place on Friday, April 26th, inside the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center, known to many as the mini-dome. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the show begins at 7:00 pm. All attendees must have their ticket and ID to enter. This is an 18+ only event.
Tickets became available to ETSU students on March 25th. Sales will be opened up to the public on April 8th. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased online a http://www.etsu.edu/sga/. Train formed in 1994 and tour out of San Francisco, California. After being rejected by Columbia Records in 1996, they released an independent album and began touring with the Counting Crows, Barenaked Ladies and others. They first reached mainstream success in 1998 with the release of their hit "Meet Virginia." The title track from their 2001 album "Drops Of Jupiter" received multiple Grammy Awards in 2002.
Train continued to rack up accolades until a 3-year hiatus that began in 2006. The band reformed in 2009 and wasted no time in making another big impact on the charts. They released the album "Save Me, San Francisco" that featured the song "Hey, Soul Sister" - the most downloaded song of 2010 and the most played song in Australian radio history. Train has continued to churn out hits such as "Marry Me," "Drive By," and "50 Ways To Say Goodbye."
Train last came through the Tri-Cities when they headlined the Electric 94.9 Acoustic Christmas Concert at Freedom Hall in December. See our coverage of this event at http://www.tricitiesnights.com/photos/album-1280.
